Resident Evil 3: Horror, bullets and adrenaline

Hello my dear gamer friends from Alt Tab Gaming. Today, I’m bringing you my review of a game that showed me what true horror and trauma in gaming mean (alongside Dino Crisis 2). I’m talking about Resident Evil 3.

If there’s one game that has defined the horror and action genre in my life, it’s Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. It’s not just the third entry in the iconic survival horror franchise, it’s also a marathon of scares, frantic chases, and tough decisions that kept me glued to the screen for hours. In this review, I want to share my experience with this title which, even though it was released back in 1999, remains an unforgettable classic.

Resident Evil 3 takes us back to Raccoon City, right in the middle of the chaos. The city, overrun by zombies, mutant creatures, and the ever-present Umbrella Corporation, becomes the backdrop for a desperate struggle for survival. This is where Nemesis, a genetically engineered killing machine with more muscles than patience, makes his terrifying debut. From his first appearance, you know that every corner of Raccoon City holds an ambush, a trap… or something worse.

The real fear in Resident Evil 3 is Nemesis. The first time you see him, you freeze and think, “This can’t be happening…” Should I fight this creature? And yes, you’ll have to deal with him, and the worst part is, he shows up when you least expect it. His deadliness and ability to follow you almost anywhere in the city are the main reasons why this game keeps you in a constant state of adrenaline.

This character is back in the spotlight with the determination and strength that have made her an icon. Jill has gone from being a S.T.A.R.S. officer to becoming a seasoned fighter hardened by horror, from her time at the Spencer mansion to her return to the streets of Raccoon City. Although she’s faced more monsters than she can count, her humanity remains intact, making her one of the most beloved protagonists of the franchise.

What stands out about Jill is her ability to not break down when faced with the impossible. Whether running from Nemesis or facing hordes of zombies, she not only survives but does so with style. Her knack for escaping what seems like certain death is as impressive as her ability to keep fighting even when all hope seems lost.

If you thought the Tyrants were scary, get ready to meet their much more brutal cousin. Nemesis is not just unstoppable; he seems to have a personal grudge against Jill. This mutant colossus shows up constantly in unexpected situations throughout the game. And just when you think you’ve beaten him, he comes back stronger. His evolution as an antagonist makes him one of the standout villains of the franchise.

Nemesis is more than just a recurring boss. He’s a constant presence that forces you to stay on your toes. His speed, strength, and ability to use weapons (yes, even rocket launchers!) make him more than just a common threat. Unlike other enemies in the series, Nemesis doesn’t need dramatic introductions; his mere presence is enough to spike your adrenaline and keep your fingers glued to the controller.

In my personal experience playing this game, I can say that “action” and “horror” are the two ingredients that made Resident Evil 3 famous. Let’s dive deeper into this…

The balance between intense action and moments of horror is one of Resident Evil 3’s strongest points. While encounters with Nemesis are designed to keep you moving, there are also moments when the game slows down just enough for you to realize how terrifying your surroundings really are. Every step you take, every bullet you fire, is filled with a sense of urgency. You know something is about to happen, but you’re not always aware of when or where it will come from.

The game is full of moments designed to make you jump, but it doesn’t rely on cheap scares. Some of the best moments are when you’re trapped, with no way out, facing a threat that seems unbeatable. Just when you think you’ve caught a break, the game throws something else in your path. That constant tension between action and horror is what makes Resident Evil 3 so addictive.

Raccoon City isn’t just a place where zombies roam aimlessly. It’s a real maze full of dangers. The streets are blocked, exits are sealed off, and time never seems to be on your side. Finding the right path isn’t just a matter of navigation; it’s a matter of survival. Exploration is loaded with palpable tension, and every corner represents a new threat.

While the enemies are a big challenge, often the limited resources and complex puzzles are what really test your mettle. The game forces you to be resourceful, to ration every bullet, and to think strategically about every move.

After hours of chases, gunfights, and moments of genuine terror, Resident Evil 3 delivers an adrenaline-fueled ending. The final scenes are an explosion of chaos, with Nemesis at his most dangerous and Jill fighting for her life. Although the ending is intense and satisfying, it also begs the question: Is there truly an end to the horror in Raccoon City?

One of the most notable features of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is that it has two different endings, adding a great replayability factor. The story’s conclusion changes depending on the decisions you make at key moments. Without giving away spoilers, I can tell you that both endings are satisfying, but the path to each one can be different because you’re forced to make decisions under pressure. There’s nothing like running from Nemesis and suddenly having to choose between escaping or confronting him head-on…

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was released on September 22, 1999 in Japan, and in November of the same year in other regions. The game arrived just as the original PlayStation was at its peak, and despite the graphical limitations of the time, Capcom managed to make the streets of Raccoon City feel oppressive, dangerous, and full of life… or rather, death. And although more than 20 years have passed since its release, the game still feels relevant thanks to its fast pace and the constant tension it creates.

I remember the first time I played Resident Evil 3; I was home alone, at night, with the lights off (big mistake), and when Nemesis burst into a room through a wall, I almost threw my controller out the window from the scare. That feeling of never being able to rest is what makes this game such a unique horror experience. Every corner, every hallway could turn into a deadly threat. Yet, despite all that stress, there was something incredibly rewarding about taking down hordes of zombies and other terrible enemies.

What I enjoy most about Resident Evil 3 is the way it balances action with fear. Even though there are quiet moments where you can gather items and solve puzzles, there’s always a lurking tension. And of course, resources are limited. You need to carefully manage your ammo, healing herbs, and other items, which adds a layer of strategy to the gameplay.

Aside from Nemesis, the different types of enemies you face, like Hunters and mutated zombies, keep things fresh and force you to adapt your tactics. The game’s atmosphere is simply unmatched, with that oppressive vibe of a ruined city where every corner could hide a new threat.

Jill from Resident Evil 3 is without a doubt one of the most memorable characters in video game history. Her development throughout the game, from someone fighting to survive to a true warrior, is one of the story’s strongest points. Plus, her relationship with Carlos and other characters adds a layer of humanity amid the chaos.

In short, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remains one of the best games in the series and a must-play for any survival horror fan. Whether you play the original or the remake, the experience of horror, bullets, and adrenaline is something you won’t want to miss.
