If you’re an RPG fan and haven’t heard of Wildermyth, let me introduce you to one of the best indie games out there. I’ve spent quite a bit of time playing it, and honestly, it’s an experience unlike any other. But before we dive into why this game is so special, I do have some bittersweet news to share: the developers at Worldwalker Games have recently announced that active development on Wildermyth has come to an end.

Let’s talk about why this game is still 100% worth your time (you can still play it!)

What is Wildermyth?

Wildermyth is a tactical RPG that combines a storybook art style with some of the most unique character progression I’ve ever seen. It’s a game where your choices genuinely matter. You don’t just level up your characters—they evolve over time in ways you might not expect. Some heroes grow old and retire, others might die in battle, and some even undergo magical transformations that change them forever. One of my characters turned into a half-human, half-wolf creature after a mystical encounter, which was not only cool but completely shifted the way I approached the game.

What is Wildermyth

Every adventure in Wildermyth feels like its own legend, where no two playthroughs are ever the same. That’s because the story dynamically adapts to your choices, so every player’s experience is unique.

The game has received incredibly high ratings on Steam, with many players praising its unique storytelling, tactical combat, and deep character development. It consistently holds an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating, which speaks volumes about how much the community loves Wildermyth. The positive feedback from players really highlights how special and engaging the game is.

The End of an Era: Active Development is Over

So, why the sad news? Nate Austin, co-owner of Worldwalker Games, recently announced that the team is wrapping up active development on Wildermyth. While they’ll still support the game with bug fixes and maintenance, there won’t be any new content coming. In his words, “Wildermyth has been a wonderful journey for us, but that journey has now come to an end.” The team feels proud of what they’ve accomplished, and although it’s hard to say goodbye, they’re ready to move on.

Here’s what this means:

  • No New Content: While they’ve wrapped up their last big update (Omenroad), you shouldn’t expect any new stories or major features moving forward.
  • Support Continues: They’ll keep fixing critical bugs and maintaining the game, so you can still enjoy it without any issues.
  • Expanding to Other Platforms: They’re working on bringing Wildermyth to more platforms, so the game will still be reaching new players. (Fingers crossed for consoles!)
  • Soundtrack Kickstarter and Translations: Live recordings of the game’s music will still be added, and French and Spanish translations for Omenroad are on the way.

This marks the end of active development, but the game isn’t going anywhere. And honestly, Wildermyth is already so packed with content and replayability that it still feels like there’s a lot to explore.

Why Wildermyth is Still Worth Playing

Now, back to why this game is amazing. The tactical combat in Wildermyth is turn-based, similar to games like XCOM or Fire Emblem, but with a unique twist. Your heroes interact with the environment in creative ways. For example, a magic user can manipulate objects in the world, like pulling a tree branch out of the ground and using it as a weapon. It makes every battle feel dynamic and personal.

But it’s not just about the combat—the storytelling is where Wildermyth truly shines. I’ve played plenty of RPGs, but none have made me feel as connected to my characters as this one. Your heroes have personal stories, relationships, and even quirks that develop over time. You never know if a hero is going to become a mythic legend or retire quietly after a long life of adventures.

Even though the developers are moving on, the community around Wildermyth is thriving. There’s a growing number of players and modders keeping the game alive, so there’s plenty of new content and ideas being shared even after the official updates stop.

Final Thoughts

Wildermyth

Wildermyth may be entering its final chapter in terms of development, but it’s far from over. If you haven’t played it yet, there’s no better time to dive in. The game offers a deep, story-driven RPG experience that’s endlessly replayable, with tactical combat that feels fresh every time.

It’s always a little sad when a beloved game wraps up its development, but I have to give credit to the team at Worldwalker Games. They’ve given us a truly special game, and even though they’re moving on, Wildermyth will continue to be a standout title in the indie RPG scene for years to come.

So, go play Wildermyth! You won’t regret it. And who knows? Maybe you’ll convince Nate to add more content and continue the adventure with us.
