Hey there, Pokémon Go fan! If you’ve landed on this post, it’s probably because you’re desperately trying to figure out how to beat Giovanni in Pokémon Go, right? Well, stress no more, because here’s your detailed but concise answer.
Of course, before you face Giovanni, you need to find him first (if you’ve already done that, skip ahead).
How to find Giovanni in Pokémon Go right now?
The only way to find Giovanni in this game is through the “Adventure Week: Taken Over” which is a special research event that kicked off on August 8th. To unlock this, you need to have reached Trainer Level 8, completed the “A Troubling Situation” research, and finished any other Team Rocket-related quests you’ve started.
Once you’ve done all that, follow these steps to track down Giovanni in Pokémon Go:
- Get the Super Rocket Radar, an item you’ll earn during “Adventure Week: Taken Over” by defeating Team GO Rocket leaders.
- It’s time to hunt Giovanni. With the Super Rocket Radar equipped, you’ll need to search for Giovanni in marked areas around you. Keep in mind that the Super Rocket Radar doesn’t work between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM local time.
Remember, Team GO Rocket Grunts will be disguising themselves as Giovanni in PokéStops and hot air balloons, so stay sharp!
The million-dollar question: How do you beat Giovanni?
Once you track him down, the hard part begins—oh yeah! It’s time to TAKE HIM DOWN. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with a guide (you’re welcome, lol).
First Pokémon:
Giovanni always starts with his trusty Persian. This Pokémon, forever tied to Giovanni, isn’t too tough to beat. Just remember it’s a Normal-type, so it’s weak to Fighting-type moves. Just don’t even think about using a Ghost-type.
Knowing Fighting-types are your best bet, I’d recommend using Lucario, Conkeldurr, Keldeo, or even Breloom could help.
Second Pokémon:
For his second Pokémon, Giovanni can throw out one of three: Honchkrow, Kangaskhan, or Kingdra. You’ll need to channel your inner Pokémon trainer to make the right call here:
- Honchkrow: A Dark/Flying type. To take this one down, you’ll want Rock, Electric, Ice, or Fairy-types (Ice or Fairy will serve you best—trust me, you’ll see why soon). Mega Diancie, Mega Gardevoir, Shadow Rampardos, and others are great picks.
- Kangaskhan: A Normal-type. Just like before, Fighting-types are your go-to here. Mega Lucario, Terrakion, and Mega Heracross would be ideal.
- Kingdra: A Water/Dragon type. To counter Kingdra, Fairy-types or Dragon-types will work well (although it has more weaknesses). Mega Gardevoir, Mega Rayquaza, or Mega Garchomp make excellent counters.
Third Pokémon:
For his third and most challenging Pokémon, Giovanni will throw out Shadow Cresselia, a powerful Psychic-type legendary. If you’ve done your homework, you’ll know Psychic-types are weak to Bug, Dark, and Ghost-types. So, you should already have a plan to take it down. Here’s a quick list of good counters for Shadow Cresselia:
- Yveltal
- Krookodile
- Darkrai
- Mega Scizor
- Bisharp
- Greninja
If you’ve paid attention to the types Giovanni uses, you should have a pretty solid strategy by now:
Fighting-type (for Persian and Kangaskhan, if you face it)
Fairy-type (for Honchkrow or Kingdra, whichever shows up)
Dark, Ghost, or Bug-types (for Shadow Cresselia)
